MEDC 2005

What happens in Las Vegas stays in your Pocket!

Exhibition Hall
Microsoft was proudly showing off new Win CE/ WM 5.0 devices as well as a Hummer advertising Windows Automotive (see Figure 1). Windows Automotive is based on Windows CE for embedded applications that deliver such systems as navigation, entertainment, and information, etc., at the driver's fingertips. Visual Studio 2005 was also prominent on the stand along with MapPoint and SQL Server/SQL Mobile.

Networking
Again, within the exhibition hall we made some good contacts, which should help you guys in the future. These contacts were with Wireless Dynamics, from Calgary, Canada, who are the makers of an SDIO format RFID scanner. They are also working on a "near field sensor" model (which is an upcoming hot technology). We also met with Microvision (Redmond, WA), maker of the "Flic" Bluetooth barcode scanner. I see the coolest aspect of their approach is that the scanner is totally detached from the Pocket PC. Hence, the Pocket PC could be in your pocket, and the scanner (which is very light and has a nice form factor) is the only item you are actually holding. A much nicer solution than the heavy ruggedized barcode scanner devices. The other nice thing about the Flic device is that it is fairly inexpensive and can be mounted in a rubber case for protection.

We spoke with both companies in great length about PocketBuilder and our RAD Object wrapper approach for hardware use. Needless to say both were impressed and the ball is already rolling in one of the cases (see Figure 2).

Summary
This show was a great success for us, possibly the best wireless/mobile show that we have attended. We managed to get great exposure and definitely have stamped our name as the UnWired Enterprise within the Windows mobile and embedded community.
