PowerBuilder: Article

Where Am I and Can I Take a Picture of It?

Pocket PowerBuilder, GPS, and photography

Pocket PowerBuilder Application
The Pocket PowerBuilder Application (PocketLocator, see Figure 5) is available on CodeXchange ( under the Special Hardware section. For the application to work we need the manufacturer's original driver DLL - SDIOCam.DLL - and the wrapper DLL for Pocket PowerBuilder - PKHP_CamIF.dll - copied into the Pocket PC Windows folder.

The application is a basic example that gets your current location data and allows a picture to be taken. The location and picture are from my hometown, Billericay in Essex County, UK (twinned town with Billerica, MA, the hometown of Pocket PB Manager Reed Shilts, which is very near the Sybase Concord office, referenced in Listing 2). The next step would be to save that data into a remote database and synchronize it back to a consolidated database.

Another enhancement to the application could be to use the GPS "RMC" Sentence that contains UTC Time & Date. As this time and date is picked up from the signal generated by the satellite atomic clock, it will be extremely accurate and could be used to set the System Date and Time using SetSystemTime() in COREDLL.DLL on the Pocket PC.

Think about expanding your enterprise mobile application input data to encompass location data as well as image data. With Pocket PowerBuilder it has never been so simple to empower your applications with interfaces to new hardware.
