Exploring the different motivations for writing iPhone apps

What makes an iPhone Developer tick?

I though I would spend some time and explore the different motivations for writing iPhone Applications, so I went about talking to a number of local iPhone Developers that I know and I have filtered down the results. First thing to say is that iPhone Developers do not just fall into one of these pots, but a combination of many.

Here is the list, in no particular order...

  • Getting to grips with a new language - Objective-C & Cocoa Touch. Where the developer is already a software development professional in their 9-5, but in a different development language
  • Creating cool games - That utilize the device and Operating System capabilities
  • Creating productive applications - That save the users time and effort
  • Pushing the Limits - Of the device & apps that have gone before
  • Using the coolest device - Well this reason has to be in the list!
  • Becoming famous - Standing out amongst your Mobile Development Peers as well as being known by the iPhone community as the developer of that '"Must have Killer App"
  • Being successful - On a platform where smaller developers can be successful
  • Making money - Striving to become the next "App Millionaire"
  • Making a difference - To the iPhone users "Mobile Lifestyle"

Developemnt Motivations

If you are an iPhone Developer, did you see yourself here? Where do you fit?

If you have other motivations not listed, feel free to leave a comment/feedback below and I will update the article intermittently.

Finally... Do you want to hear the thoughts of an iPhone Developer, beyond what I have said above, please take some time to check out where they have just interviewed a UK iPhone Developer that I know, John Friend of Apps In My Pocket. Check it out here
