Revisiting the iPhone Crystal Ball

How close were my predictions?

Over the last few weeks we have seen the public announcement of iPhone OS 4.0 and the news of the lost prototype iPhone HD, so I thought I would revisit my iPhone Crystal Ball predictions to see how close I was.

OK, here is my iPhone Crystal ball list and the things I was hoping to see happen this year…

  • iPhone SDK Private APIs becoming public, such as the SDK having an easy ways to update the calendar etc.Correct

Great to see some of these appear as part of iPhone OS 4.0

  • Faster Processor, possible multi-coreMaybe

We will have to wait until mid-2010 and the announcement of iPhone HD

  • More MemoryMaybe

We will have to wait until mid-2010 and the announcement of iPhone HD

  • Improvements to the camera (including flash), and a customer facing camera along with the iPhone OS software to include iChat for use with the camera.Correct

If the lost Prototype iPhone HD is the device then yay!

  • More fully featured Bluetooth stack, that will allow connection to mobile Bluetooth printers.... In fact, print options in the SDK.Wrong

BOOOOOO.... lots of BOOOOO's. Apple you're missing a great trick here for the Mobile Enterprise Market that I know you're striving to make more inroads into! See here

  • Ability to present via projectors from an iPhone, so a hardware connection along with the iPhone OS software to include iWork. Correct

Semi-correct with the iPad, and I still believe that iPhone HD will follow suite

  • More external hardware to interface with.Maybe

Keeping a watchful look-out

  • Apple to free up the Phone springboard a little. With other new phones hitting the market I am starting to feel like my iPhone does not give me as personalized experience/feel as I would want. It definitely gets UX (user experience) advantages from being so rigidly designed but at the moment it's all 'dock' and no 'desktop'.Correct

Thank goodness for groups etc, I was reaching the limit

  • Battery life to increaseMaybe

This has got to happen, not only through great OS software but improvements in battery technology

  • More Business Apps in the App StoreMaybe

Gradually increasing & the adoption of iPad by business & developers will add to this. See here

  • A very exciting WWDC 2010Maybe

Keeping a watchful look-out

Not a bad result I believe, though I will try harder in the future.
