Ten Days on the Road with an iPad...

Travelling Light

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to head out to San Francisco, CA for Apple's WWDC and I decided to, in parallel, test one of my recent Tweets (Twitter: @ithain) which posed the question… "Can you rely on an iPad for a business trip?".  OK, I did slightly move the goal posts, by adding… "and my iPhone", but that is a necessity that I would even have with my MacBook. My iPad is a 64GB WiFi version and before the trip it was loaded with training videos, apps and my music collection… everything that a fresh faced business traveler could foresee.

iPad and iPhone TravellingI had used the iPad for just a week before the trip but made sure that I had 100% of battery life before my 10 hour flight. In fact jumping ahead, I also charged the iPad back to 100% before my returning flight to London and maybe only 3 full charges in between… the power life for my whole 10 days was excellent. The iPad took each of my flights in its stride, with power left over, which is fantastic. In the past I have used mobile devices in-flight and have had to limit my usage to please the power gods.

Here was my agenda...

Day #1 - Flight out to SFO1 Infinite Loop
Day #2 - Pilgrimage to Apple, Cupertino, CA… It had to be done
Day #3 to #7 - World Wide Developer Conference at Moscone West
Day #8 to #9 - Transcribing personal session notes
Day #10 - Flight back to LHR

What apps did I use whilst I was away? For my flights, music from the iPod app, Videos and iPhone development books on iBooks. For my pilgrimage, Twitterific and PhotoShare for getting photos from the iPhone to the iPad, For WWDC, Pages, Penultimate and Shazam... Yes there was so much cool music between WWDC sessions, Sazam was a must for finding out what was being played and adding it to your music via iTunes. For my day to day usage Twitterific, Facebook, RSS Reader, Safari, Maps and EMail.

Never once during my trip did I wish that I had my MacBook, in fact for day to day usage, I now wish my MacBook had a touchscreen like the iPad. Even the iPad's keyboard, in landscape mode especially, posed no problem for my typing skills. With the iPad's great screen & software keyboard, it is easy enough to use for fully fledged business applications, such as Pages and Keynote, as well as be entertained and educated. In fact I created quite a few reports and presentations whilst on the road and with the iPad's connector to VGA, I now have the freedom to present with a really portable device.

iPad AdConclusion - The writing is on the wall!!! Traveling light, with the iPad as my trusty companion by my side, was an absolute delight and a great eye opening experience, one that I will be repeating more often in the future.

You can rely on an iPad for a business trip and now I am totally convinced that the iPad has a place not only in the Consumer world, but the Enterprise world for the Mobile Worker.
