Predicting Mobility Trends

Mobility crystal ball for the next 12-18 months

Just over a month ago I spoke to a few colleagues on the subject of Enterprise Mobility and I went into my Evangelistic mode proclaiming that...

"Mobility in business is now the norm and that any company that is not looking at mobilizing their workforce and creating Mobile Information Workers, will be left in the starting blocks, where as others sprint away allowing proactive business processes and access to core information anytime anywhere".

Then out of the blue one colleague asked me what my predictions would be in the area of Mobility for the next three years. I immediately started to chuckle and said that it would be hard enough to predict the next 12-18 months, but after I stopped laughing I started to brainstorm my thoughts and predictions for the next 12-18 months ahead.

Here is what I was left with...

  • Massive market growth for Tablet Devices and a huge take up within the Enterprise space
  • Increase in mainstream availability of Mobile Business Apps on public App Stores
  • Increase in cross training of Corporate Developers to embrace Mobile Development Technologies
  • Increase of Enterprise in-house developed Mobile Apps
  • Formation of Corporate In House App Stores will become a norm
  • Tablet usage to overtake smartphone usage, consumer and prosumer
  • Mobile Internet usage will surpass Desktop internet usage
  • Increase of Cloud Services usage by Mobile Devices
  • Long Term Evolution (LTE/4G) to gain momentum and to take off in many countries, slowly at first but exponential growth at the end of the 18 months
  • NFC usage in Mobile Devices to introduce new innovative apps even in the consumer area, beyond where NFC has been used in the past
  • M-Wallet concept becoming something that users readily accept, as part of the NFC usage above
  • Security on devices increases to facial recognition
  • Devices to become Smarter, Faster, Slimmer & therefore lighter and more mobile
  • Devices will become more readily used with external devices, such as within Medical such as the ability to integrate more with external peripherals, eg Heart, BP, Blood Sugar Monitors etc

Rest assured that I will revisit each of these topics in the future, so make sure you check back every few days and please follow me on Twitter @ithain
